Finally, and as expected.
European Union foreign ministers approved new sanctions against the Myanmar regime, including an embargo on the export of wood, gems and metals. It’s a pity that it must come from the EU again and not from the NATO. Although economic sanctions will mostly hit the regular population. With less money coming in the country, the people will also suffer. But perhaps, the more they suffer, the faster they will try to throw their current leaders out ( it sounds harsh but it’s true).
I’m not for interference in other countries politics, but in this particular case I would vote for an international task force to overthrow the leaders and hold democratic elections. Only one country should approve this. That is China. Since China is ‘friends’ with Myanmar, it could have tremendous consequences not to have approvement of China.

Daar heb je wel gelijk in, maar ja druk zetten op China dat is precies uit den boze, net zoals druk op USA.
De plaatselijke bevolking lijdt al bijna 20 jaar onder het regime van Gen. Than Shwe en zijn voorgangers en de plaatselijke bevolking heeft wat mij betreft al genoeg onderdrukking ondervonden. Het lijkt me véél verstandiger van de EU (of wie dan ook) om druk uit te oefenen op buurlanden India en China ipv zich rechtstreeks te richten op Yangon. De ‘economie’, voor zover daar sprake van kan zijn in zo’n arm land, wordt namelijk voor 90% rechtgehouden door beide Aziatische grootmachten.
Maar dat soort druk ligt natuurlijk een pak minder voor de hand. China en India genereren immers véél kapitaal voor het westen en zijn dus als het ware untouchable.
